Tell us about what you do at dmca and what you like most about it?

My role is to provide initial and ongoing holistic financial planning advice to clients. The thing I like most about my job is helping clients meet their financial goals and objectives as good advice can provide a positive impact on outcomes in the future.

I am most grateful for…?

My wife and I are originally from Adelaide, and we had both been living over in Melbourne for a long time. Off the back of a very crazy two-year period in Melbourne during Covid, we made the decision, along with our two young girls, to move back to Adelaide at the start of 2022 to be closer to family and be able to enjoy the places and things we used to do growing up in South Australia. The thing I’m most grateful for is that the move has gone well, that we have all settled into Adelaide life well, and that I have a happy and healthy family.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given about money and finance?

I remember growing up that my grandfather used to teach me about the importance of saving money and investing, in particular, investing for the long term, compounding returns and diversification. He also used to say to me that if an investment looks too good to be true, it often is, and would then use examples of mining shares which he had invested in during the 1970’s (he still had the old share certificates) which he was told at the time were a sure thing to make money but they went bust. His advice and guidance on money and finance has always stood me in good stead.

One other piece of advice regarding money and finance which has stuck with me was a saying from an old client of mine. He would always say to me “I’d much rather give with a warm hand than a cold one”, meaning he would much rather give to someone (in his case, to children, grandchildren and charities) whilst he was still alive and be able to see the benefits it provided rather than giving to someone when he was dead through a Will. Having this particular client say this, and ultimately putting it in practice, was something in my working life I don’t think I will forget.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I used to be a Swimming Instructor, Trainer and Examiner, including private work (pool centres), Government work (school classes at the beach and in the pool), VACSWIM and work for the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia.

What’s the one thing you can’t you do without (and why)?

A morning coffee. The only way to start the day!
